Cube Construction Consultant, Mark Johnston, MCIOB, NEC Reg, has been appointed as Vice Chair of the Nottingham Hub of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Midlands & Eastern Region, alongside Julia Allen MCIOB as Chair.
A Chartered CIOB member since 1999, Mark aims to build on the last 18 months of local hub committee involvement and help draw from the Hub’s depth of knowledge and experience available to promote the CIOBs strengths and benefits to its members and beyond.
Mark Johnston co-founder and consultant at Cube commented: “I am proud to represent my profession locally as a CIOB hub representative. As our industry is experiencing a period of significant change, it’s great to have the opportunity to be actively involved in providing leadership, direction, and inspiration to stakeholders within it. For me, that’s supporting individuals and companies to realise their potential through the application of best practice.”
With more than 30 years’ experience in the construction industry, Mark followed a traditional career path after studying at Sheffield Hallam University and Nottingham Trent University. Working for several different construction companies in multiple sectors, including Kier Northern, Mowlem’s, Wilson Bowden, Mansell Construction and Balfour Beatty, Mark’s roles spanned Site Engineer to Senior Project Manager. He then went on to become Operations Manager of a national fit out contractor with particular emphasis on major projects division, responsible for implementing a formal process for and changing the culture of project delivery.
In 2019, Mark and co-founder, Nicola Slater, established Cube Construction Consultants, with a focus on implementing best practice into every element of construction. Working with clients, including main contractors, Cube provides construction management consultancy, independent project reviews and process improvement planning - mentoring those with less experience and improving project outcomes.
Cube became a CIOB Chartered Consultancy in 2022 and has now successfully transitioned into CIOB Company membership as a Chartered Construction Management Consultancy.
Mark continues: “I’m keen to focus on raising awareness to stakeholders about how competence and best practice are the core principles for positive career progression and company success. By promoting and supporting such engagement we can demonstrate how the CIOB can support and aid that journey.”
Cube is currently in partnership with the CIOB Academy to provide awareness training about the Building Safety Act, legislation that affects everyone in the building and construction industry. Mark believes this topic is one means of creating strategic partnerships, providing informal and formal training content for stakeholders, and promoting the value of CIOB interaction.
Julia Allen MCIOB will take up the role of Chair, with Mark Johnston MCIOB, NECReg as Vice Chair of the CIOB Nottingham Hub from July 2024 for a two year term.
